unless israel extends the band. a man shot and killed his estranged wife and stepchildren and turned the gun on himself. a neighbor that was a police officer heard the shots. inside, the police found the bodies of the children and wife. his children were also inside the house, but they were not harmed. all right, we'll go to the weather center now. we have breaking weather news bernadette woods has the latest. well, we have a tornado warning in effect for howard county. i want to show you first warning doppler weather radar. we have the rotation in it and it's gotten into a thunderstorm. this is what we're seeing and this storm potential for a tornado with the thunderstorm. we'll see a few things here to show you what's going on with it. it's moving from the south to the north.
12:16 pm
if we saw something spin up, it would be here. what we do, we take a look at the wind and in the radar, we can look at the winds from a few different directions and you can see the winds coming and going towards the radar. one area is when you see the different colors banked up against each other. and when you see the differences, that's when we would indicate this happening. tornado warnings in effect for howard county and the biggest threat area is right here. we'll show you who we're concerned with. these are the regions where it could be moving. so, when we take a look at some of the roads. we'll put them on here for you. some of the highways in this area are, we'll take this one here. well, this is not coming up yet. highway 29, that's what i thought. highway 29 is one of the regions to be concerned south of simpsonville, too. this is the region we're looking at.
12:17 pm
highway 32 and 29. right here, you'll want to go to the safety spot. when we say that, we mean, go to the lowest level of your house. if you have a basement, you want it to be your basement and if not, the first area of your house and an interior closet or bathroom. and about a half hours worth of time. we have until 12:45 with the warning in effect. it's howard county we're looking at. this is the active weather pattern and not just rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms popping up. and this is enough rotation they're concerned. they have not spotted a tornado with this one, there's a rotation in the thunderstorm that could go up to the ground and around. that would spin around like a tornado. that's what we're concerned with.
12:18 pm
a tornado warning was issued for howard county. and this one has a lot of rain with it. you see the tornadoes further west. you see the clear cut pictures of the funnel out of the thunderstorm, that doesn't really happen in the east. you don't see them until they're on top of you. you don't want to mess around with these. go to the safe spot now. if you're in a different area and if you know someone who works here, let them know that there's a tornado warning until 12:45. not that far from columbia, it's basically crossing over highway 32 and west of highway 29. that's where we're most concerned and you can see, there's a lot of rain over clarksville now. there's probably even hail from this. it's usually on this section we would see the tornado form if it were to happen. another thing, too, we look at
12:19 pm
to see if something's going to come down. we can draw it here. we have so many different directions that spin around when we have the tornado. one of the things is the inflow area. you can see that notch there. that's the inflow notch going into the thunderstorm. also, here, it would be coming down from the north. when they're banked up against each other, that's where we would see the version here. we'll keep you up to. we'll send it to break and we're not leaving it completely. we'll have more on the tornado warning. all right, we talked to sky chopper 13 and mike perry. can you hear us? captain mike is heading towards the howard county area at this time. he's probably on his way to the mall. >> i'm sorry, don, are you talking to me? yes, what are you doing.
12:20 pm
>> there was a stabbing over the mall and that's where we are. we were rolling over here to cover that and we have the ceilings here and as we look to the west, we can see the skies darker and we're about 7, 8 miles from the area and we're going to shoot the news and head back to the airport. right now, there's no rain showers oar heavy winds. with the warning, obviously, you'll want to use caution and obviously, we're in front of it and we'll be out of the way of this thing. okay, that's good to see it at ground level. thank you, mike perry. >> we'll send it to bernadette woods right now. well, you can see from the pictures. it was just clouds and rain and that's what we get with these. and if there was to be a tornado, you won't see it until it's on top of you. it's this area here. there's the storm from south to north.
12:21 pm
it's moving north at 25 miles per hour. if there were to be a tornado spinning out of this, it would be this area here right now and moving to the north at 25 miles per hour. and so, this is just in the columbia region, it's a populated area and if you know anyone in this area that's not watching now and aware of this, give them a call and let them know this is time to go to the safe spot. we'll go over this once again. sometimes you don't know what to do. take a look at the screen, go to a basement and interior room of the house. go to the lowest level of the building. stay away from windows. a will the of the time, it's not the wind, but the blowing glass annedidae be. stay away from windows and you'll want as many walls between you and the outside of your house. now, we'll send it to a break and update you on this.
12:22 pm
and update you on this. and 12:4:4,,,,,,,,,,,,
12:23 pm
bob ehrlich pretends to be for the working guy... but he's not on our side. i thought i knew bob ehrlich, but then i found out... he raised property taxes on every maryland family... and business. he increased college tuition... by 40%. 40%. and i thought i knew bob ehrlich. he was against raising the minimum wage. made $2.5 million... working for a lobbying firm. $2.5 million? he's not really on my side. with this tough economy, we really need a governor on our side.
12:24 pm
>> there's a tornado effect for howard county. the biggest concern with this is the tornado. this is not the strongest of thunderstorms. this is not widespread. what's concerning is that there's a lot of rotation going
12:25 pm
on. if we get a thunderstorm like we did and it shows the spin, you don't want to mess around with it and there was a spin indicated by the thunderstorm on radar. we have not had any ground reports and we've issued the severe weather alert for 12:45. this is the storm we've tracked in here. it's lost form since we first went on with this. and the thing is, they're moving fast from the south to the north at 25 miles per hour. and when we look at these, that's not the normal direction of the thunderstorms. they usually come from the northwest and it would usually come from this area. we're not seeing the clearest cut indication of them. we've gone to the velocity product. and you've seen us use this. when we look for the bright colors, towards and away from the radar, it shows when the wind comes away or towards it.
12:26 pm
the two pixels, that's where we would see the rotation. in this area, that's not that strong. this is where it would be here in the columbia region. in the legend here, the brightest colors, that's when it has the biggest wind. the bright greens and the bright reds, that's the clear cut indication. this is not as clear cut. if it were to happen, it would be here where we would have the tornado spinning up. you don't want to mess around with it. and if you know someone here, we have a tornado warning in effect until 12:45, we'll continue to monitor this. we want to give you a live look outside from sky eye chopper 13 and captain mike perry. >> we're on the westside of downtown and moved closer to the city. the storm is tracking in a northerly direction. from the ellicott city area
12:27 pm
working northbound along route 29 and 32. it's hard to see, this is an embed bad thunderstorm. and these heavy clouds aaron the outside of the -- clouds around the outside of the thunderstorm obscure the thunderstorm. it makes it dangerous for aviation, but there's not a lot of airplane traffic out here and the airliners are well above this. at this point, there's very, very dark clouds and they're difficult to see because of the cloud cover on the westside. that's tracking northbound along route 29 and heading up into north of ole cocot city. thank you, and we'll point out that the camera can zoom in. it's mild closer looking thans the. >> we'll go to a break and be
